 Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg werd
geboren in Doncaster,
Engeland op 20 juli 1938. Op tweejarige leeftijd verhuisde ze samen met
haar familie gedurende zes jaar naar Jodhpur in India, waar haar vader
Louis Rigg, een spoorwegingenieur, een contract getekend
had. Tijdens haar jaren in India leerde ze Hindi spreken.
Opleiding
Op achtjarige leeftijd keerde ze terug naar Engeland en trok in bij
haar grootouders in Yorkshire
en ging naar de St. Christopher’s school in Great Missenden
(Buckinghamshire). Drie jaar later keerden haar ouders terug uit India
en schreven ze haar in in de strenge 'Fulneck
Girls School' (Pudsey). “We were never
allowed to talk to
boys” herinnert Diana zich, “It
was so strict that you even had to wear your hair according to orders.
It had to be a precise length. Then they used to inspect our gym slips,
which had to be exactly two inches above the knee when we were kneeling
down." Als tiener rebelleerde ze tegen de strenge
discipline en lag constant in conflict met de schooldirectie. "But I was tall and redheaded. And tall
redheads always got caught."
In 1955 kon ze zich inschrijven in de 'Royal
Academy of Dramatic Art'
(RADA). Ze deed modellenwerk en serveerde in restaurants om zichzelf te
kunnen onderhouden.
Vroege
carrière
Na het beëindigen van haar opleiding kreeg
Diana onmiddellijk de kans om met veel succes op te treden met
de 'Royal
Shakespeare Company' (1959).
De Wrekers - The Avengers
Door de lage lonen in de theaterwereld verdiende Diana wat
bij met
gastoptredens in TV-series. Tijdens één van deze
optredens werd ze opgemerkt door de producers van 'The Avengers' die
haar, na het opstappen van Honor
Blackman, de rol van Emma
Peel
aanboden (1965). Ze was echter niet de eerste keuze. Elizabeth
Shepherd, een blonde actrice oorspronkelijk gecast als Mrs.
Peel,
vervolledigde anderhalve episode waarna ze vervangen werd door Diana
Rigg. "We were told to turn up in
black trousers and sweaters. We looked like a neofascist army,"
herinnert Rigg zich de auditie. "I
had not seen ‘The Avengers’ when I was cast, but
the idea
of doing a television series...that was a little wacky and way out, it
appealed to me as the perfect antidote."
Alhoewel ‘The Avengers’ professioneel en esthetisch
voldoening schonk bleef Diana’s loonbriefje ondermaats. Na 12
episodes ontdekte Diana dat ze minder verdiende dan de cameraman. "I made a bit of a stink about it,"
herinnert ze zich. "Any argument about
money is ugly, but I felt I was being exploited."
Als Emma Peel portretteerde Diana Rigg één van de
weinig
echt geëmancipeerde vrouwen zonder toegevingen. Andere
‘hippe’ heldinnen vertoonden gebrek aan
overtuiging. Emma
Peel's relatie met Steed
werd niet bedreigd door zijn mannelijk ego. In
de episode ‘The
Masterminds’
wordt Steed lid van Ransack, een intellectuele organisatie. Terwijl
Mrs. Peel zonder problemen een IQ test kan afleggen kan Steed pas lid
worden nadat ze zijn IQ test voor hem aflegt.
Emma
Peel kwam als karakter sterk overeen met de persoonlijke
overtuigingen van Diana Rigg: "No man
will ever conquer me or make me
his slave" zei Diana ooit. "Nobody
owns me, nobody will. I don't yearn
for security. Marriage might be fine for many people, but I find
it’s for permanence appalling." En al snel
schokte Diana het
conservatieve kamp door openlijk samen te gaan wonen met de getrouwde Philip Saville.
Ze
weigerde zelfs te trouwen met Saville nadat
zijn vrouw een scheiding had toegezegd.
Diana was een uitgesproken feministe die geen toegevingen deed aan
reporters. Wanneer ze arriveerde in de US merkte een journalist op dat
ze een trendsetter was in de vrouwenmode (verwijzing naar de fameuze
Emma Peeler broekpakken). Spontaan repliceerde Diana, "Yes, I know. But
you Americans still don't admit woman to your restaurants who wear
trouser suits."
Haar liberalisme schok de fans geenszins af, maar de fans schrokken
uiteindelijk Diana af. "I must say it
was great fun at first being
recognized on the street...but I'm really not equipped to be a
celebrity. I loathe intrusions on my privacy...and the autograph
syndrome is simply beyond my comprehension." Ze wees ooit
een
handtekeningenjager af door te zeggen dat het illegaal is om
handtekeningen uit te delen op straat.
Diana Rigg werd tot tweekeer genomineerd voor een Emmy (1967 and 1968),
ze
verloor beide keren van Barbara
Bain (‘Mission:
Impossible’). Veel later ontdekte Patrick
Macnee dat Diana vond
dat ze maar twee vrienden had op de set: hij en de chauffeur die haar
elke morgen naar de studio bracht. Patrick Macnee: "I
certainly did not
have an affair with her, but I do love her very much. We had a
remarkable partnership; it was a professional marriage in a way. It
only lasted for 18 months, but it was very successful and very good.
She is a great actress, and we're still very good friends."
Latere
carrière
Na
‘The Avengers’ probeerde Diana een
filmcarrière
uit te bouwen, "a chequered record, to
put it baldly" zei ze later.
Haar portrettering van Tracy
de Vicenzo in ‘On Her
Majesty’s Secret
Service’ (1969) als Bond’s vrouw bracht
een vitaliteit tot
de film die zelden geëvenaard werd door andere Bond girls.
Oorspronkelijk wou ze de rol afzeggen om de hoofdrol te spelen in de
musical ‘Paint
Your Wagon’
maar door de ziekte van haar
vader zag ze hier van af.
In ‘The
Assassination
Bureau’ (1969) vertolkt Diana de rol
van Miss Winters aan de zijde van Oliver
Reed. De film werd genomineerd
voor een Golden
Globe als beste Engelstalige buitenlandse film.
Alhoewel ze meestal beter was dan de films waarin ze acteerde zijn er
naast ‘The Assassination Bureau’ nog twee
ondergewaardeerde
films op haar palmares: ‘The
Hospital’ met George C.
Scott
(1971) en ‘Theatre
of Blood’
met Vincent
Price (1973).
In juni 1970 keerde Diana terug naar het theater in de productie ‘Abelard
and Heloise’.
Een korte naaktscène in het
halfduister veroorzaakte heel wat deining. Rigg was de eerste Engelse
actrice die naakt op de bühne verscheen. "All
the press in London
were down on us, most of them without having seen the play,"
herinnert
Diana zich. Diana’s protest werd weggewuifd met artikels die
het
stuk minimaliseerden tot ‘Emma un-Peeled’. Haar
protest was
echter altijd voorzien van de nodige zelfhumor en steeds provocerend
ten aanzien van de pers: "I see no
point in being defensive about
eroticism. I think it's rather good to have it. But if people come to
see me as a sex symbol, they'll have enormous problems confrontated
with me. I have to make up my backside - otherwise, when I show it
onstage, it looks like a piece of old cod." De critici
gaven Diana
uiteindelijk gelijk. ‘The Times’ schreef: "She looks
handsome, she always does when that auburn mane tumbles over her
shoulders".
In maart 1971 ging het stuk in Amerika in
première.
Theatercriticus John
Simon speculeerde of de
naaktscène wel
nodig was en schreef: "Diana Rigg is
built like a brick mausoleum with
insufficient flying buttresses." Maar de ‘New
York Times’
recensent Clive Barnes beschreef de controversiële
drie
minuten als "the most tasteful,
tactful and apposite nude love scene I
have ever encountered. As a matter of record, I suppose Miss Rigg and
Mr. Michell are the first major stars to appear naked on the Broadway
stage, but...the scene is neither prurient nor distasteful. Diana Rigg
is perfect: as sensuous as a cat, with hidden fires beneath the
surface."
Diana Rigg kreeg een Tony nominatie voor haar rol in ‘Abelard
and
Heloise’. Een jaar later stampte ze terug tegen de schenen
van de
critici door een andere naaktscène te spelen in het
toneelstuk ‘Jumpers’.
Hierna vernieuwde ze de band met Shakespeare
door Lady
Macbeth te spelen aan de zijde van Anthony
Hopkins. Ze raakte
de negatieve pers kwijt maar haar gevoel voor humor bleef. Acteur Denis
Quilley moest in een scène zijn hand onder haar
kleed steken,
Diana schrikte Quilley op door te fluisteren: "Up
a bit...left a bit,
down a bit...golden shot!" Als lid van ‘Sir
Laurence Olivier's
National Theatre Company’, werd Diana de bijnaam
‘Tits’ Rigg gegeven door Mr. Olivier. Het bleek dat
ze
regelmatig weigerde om een bh te dragen.
In 1973 werd Diana gevraagd om de titelrol te
spelen in de Amerikaanse
sitcom ‘Diana’. "After two years at
the
National Theatre I
was heavily in debt to my bank," signaleerde Diana. Ze
beschreef haar
karakter als "probably the first
divorcee on television ... she's very
sophsticated, in her thirties, with lots of boyfriends. And she's not
untouched by human hands." Als Diana Smythe,
modecoördinator, werd
haar flat overrompeld door een excentrieke cast van medewerkers. De
critici brandmerkten de serie als een flauw afkooksel van ‘The
Mary Tyler Moore Show’. "After
filming the second episode,"
herinnert Diana, "I knew it was going
to be garbage. I had never known
such a failure on such a grand scale...if you embrace failure; it's
rather less painful. That's one of the best lessons I've ever learned!"
De duur van de serie bleef beperkt tot 30 episodes van telkens 30
minuten.
Ze keerde terug naar Engeland en triomfeerde vervolgens meermaals op de
bühne onder meer in de stukken ‘Pygmalion’
en ‘Antony
and Cleopatra’. Diana maakte tijdens een party
kennis met Menahem Gueffen, een artiest en lid van het
Israëlische Palmach
leger. Hun relatie die begon in 1973 was vrij onstuimig. "We
were in a hotel six floor up," herinnert Diana zich, "I told him I was
leaving. He said, 'Fine, I’ll help you pack.' He did. Then he
picked up my suitcase, and all my clothes, and threw them out of the
window. I was amazed. I seriously felt I'd met my match."
In 1974 ging
het koppel uiteen en Diana keerde terug naar Broadway voor
‘The
Misanthrophe’: "To
go on living for me is to go on learning -
learning about life and everything that makes life. Wanting to go on
learning makes one vulnerable, of course. You are always exposing
yourself to risk. I hope I can take it."
Haar volgende liefde was ex-Scots Guard Archie Stirling. Ze trouwden
niet onmiddellijk, ook niet nadat dochter Rachael
Atlanta geboren werd
(30 mei 1978). "I had worked solidly
for 18 years and, by that time, I
had become aware that the career just wasn't going to be enough.
Pregnancy, and all that came with it, was enjoyable, relaxing. The
comparative quiet in one's life that follows having a baby..."
In 1982
trouwden Diana en Archie in New York, het koppel ging uiteen in 1990.
Zich verder afzonderend van haar rol als Emma Peel, trad Diana op in
verschillende toneelstukken waaronder ‘Heartbreak
House’
(1983), ‘Little Eyolf’
(1985) en ‘Follies’
(1986). In 1988 ontving ze een CBE
(Commander of the Order of
the
British Empire) van Queen
Elizabeth II.
Gedurende de jaren 1990 maakte een nieuwe generatie televisiekijkers
kennis met Diana, ze introduceerde elke aflevering van
de ‘Pbs’
Mystery!’ serie. "Deep
down I have an
irreverent spirit", verklaarde Diana, "People who take themselves
deeply seriously are really good at tragedy, and I don't take myself
that seriously...I could have gone on and done greater things...but I
didn't. It's as simple as that."

verontwaardiging: "The real difficulty
is finding vehicles for the
ladies. There aren't very many new parts for us. I don't know why. I
think we're fascinating creatures." Ze is nog niets
veranderd.
En alhoewel Diana door TV-guide (US) tot tweemaal toe (1999 en 2002)
uitgeroepen werd tot de meest sexy vrouw op televisie was haar
zelfbeeld minder flatterend: "The
shoulders are extremely wide and very
square, and the breasts don't compensate for this width. The hips are
too wide. The arms and wrists are slender, but the knees and the calve
are over-developed. The jaw is much, much too strong and the mouth is
too small."
Haar gevoelens ten opzichte van ‘The Avengers’ zijn
zeker
niet nostalgisch. Diana bleef vrienden met Patrick Macnee maar, buiten
het occasioneel bekijken van een aantal afleveringen met haar dochter
Rachael, kijkt ze raar of zelden naar de serie. "When
I get touchy,
it's at the suggestion that ‘The Avengers’ was the
sum of
my professional career."

kreeg in maart de diagnose kanker. Ze bracht de laatste maanden van
haar leven door in liefde, waarbij ze met trots terugkeek op wat ze
allemaal heeft bereikt in haar omvangrijke carrière. Ik zal haar
verschrikkelijk missen.”
