 Joanna
Lumley Lamond werd geboren op 1 mei 1946 in Srinagar, in het prinsdom
Kashmir en Jammu, dat toen deel uitmaakte van Brits-Indië.
Haar
ouders waren majoor James Rutherford Lumley, officier in het 6de Gurkha
Rifles, en Beatrice Rose Weir. Na de onafhankelijkheid van India in
1947 werden de Lumleys verplaatst naar Malaya nu Maleisië.
Later
vestigden ze zich in Kent, Engeland.
Opleiding
Na de terugkeer van haar familie
naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk ging Joanna naar de Mickledene school in
Kent
en vervolgens naar de 'St. Mary's Anglican Convent' school in Hastings.
Na een niet geslaagde auditie bij de 'Royal
Academy of Dramatic Arts', men vond haar te dik en te lelijk,
volgde ze een modellencursus bij Lucie Clayton. Hierna bouwde ze een
carrière als model uit, ze werd het huismodel van de Britse
ontwerpster Jean
Muir en werkte samen met fotografen zoals Lord Lichfield
en Brian
Duffy.
Vroege
carrière
Haar eerste TV rol was als een 'flirterige patiënt' in de soap
opera 'Emergency-Ward
10'. In 1966 verscheen ze in een vroege aflevering van 'The Bruce Forsyth
Show'.
Haar filmcarrière begon in 1969 met een kleine rol in de
film 'Some Girls Do'
en als Bond-girl in 'On Her
Majesty's Secret Service'
waarin ze het Engels meisje speelde tussen Blofeld's 'Angels of Death'.
In 1970 vertolkte ze een hoofdrol in de Britse komedie 'The Breaking of
Bumbo'.
Ze speelde Elaine Perkins, de vriendin van Ken Barlow, in de soapserie 'Coronation Street'
in 1973. In de 'Are You Being
Served?'
aflevering 'His and Hers' portretteerde ze Miss French, een parfum
vertegenwoordiger en in de aflevering 'German Week' verscheen ze als
'German Lady'.
Ze verscheen als Jessica op het grote scherm in 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula',
de laatste Dracula Hammer Film met in de hoofdrollen Peter Cushing en
Christopher Lee. En in 1976, juist voor 'The
New Avengers', vertolkte ze de rol van Miss Parkyn in de
Britse komedie 'Don't
Just Lie There, Say Something!'.
De Wrekers - The Avengers
In 1976 solliciteerde Joanna Lumley voor een rol in 'The New Avengers'.
Meer dan 300 actrices deden een screentest. Na een strenge selectie
kozen de producers Brian Clemens
en Albert Fennell haar
uit 5 overgebleven actrices. De anderen waren Anne Zelda, Cassandra Harris, Diana
Quick en Gabrielle
Drake.
Eerder solliciteerde Joanna al voor de rol van Hannah Wilde in de toneelversie van 'The Avengers',
maar ze werd afgewezen. Ze bedacht zelf de naam Purdey
voor haar rol nadat
bleek dat de oorspronkelijke naam Charly tot copyrightproblemen kon
leiden.
Latere
carrière
In 1979 vertolkte Joanna Lumley, aan de zijde van David McCallum,
één van de hoofdrollen in de sciencefictionserie 'Sapphire & Steel'.
Het hoogtepunt in haar carrière kwam er in 1992 wanneer ze
de rol van Patsy Stone vertolkt in 'Absolutely
Fabulous'.
Ander televisiewerk omvatte onder meer een rol in heeft 'Lovejoy' (1992), 'Class Act' (1994), 'Dr.
Willoughby' (1999), 'Up
in Town' (2002), 'Sensitive
Skin' (2005), 'Jam
& Jerusalem' (2006) en 'Mistresses' (2010).
Op filmgebied acteerde ze in 'Trail
of the Pink
Panther' (1982), 'Curse
of the Pink
Panther' (1983), 'Shirley
Valentine' (1989), 'Innocent
Lies' (1995), 'James
and
the Giant Peach' (1996), 'Prince
Valiant'
(1997), 'Parting

Woogie' (2009) en 'Late Bloomers' (2010).
Joanna Lumley heeft één van de meest herkenbare
stemmen
van Groot-Brittannië. In 1995 deed ze de stem van Annie, de
lappenpop, in de animatieserie 'The
Forgotten Toys', ze leende
ook haar stem aan de Tim Burton-film 'Corpse Bride'
(2005).
Lumley werkte ook mee aan verschillende documentaires waaronder 'Girl Friday'
(1994), 'Joanna
Lumley in the Kingdom of the Thunderdragon' (1997), 'Joanna Lumley in the
Land of the Northern Lights' (2008) en 'Joanna Lumley: Catwoman'
(2009 en 'Joanna
Lumley's Nile' (2011).
In 2010 debuteerde ze op Broadway in het Music Box Theatre met 'La Bête'.
Voor deze rol werd ze genomineerd voor een Tony Award.
Activisme en
liefdadigheidswerk
Naast haar werk als actrice is Lumley zeer actief als dierenrechten-,
milieu- en mensenrechtenactiviste. Ze steunt de Gurkha Justice Campaign,
die gelijke rechten voor Gurkha's als voor andere Britse militaire
veteranen als doelstelling heeft. Verder sponsort ze de Joanna Lumley
Fellowship in Environmental Science aan de Universiteit van Oxford, is
ze activist voor 'Survival
International' en is ze ambassadrice voor 'Tree Aid'
en 'Venture
Trust Nepal'.
Andere goede doelen waarvoor ze zich inzet zijn onder meer 'Suffolk Family
Carers', 'Kids
for Kids', 'Book Aid
International', 'Born Free
Foundation', 'Mind', 'ActionAid'
en 'SANE'.
Privé
leven
Tijdens de jaren 1960, toen het maatschappelijk onaanvaardbaar was, was
Joanna Lumley een ongehuwde moeder. Haar zoon, James, werd geboren in
1967. Vele jaren later onthulde ze dat de natuurlijke vader van James
Lumley de fotograaf Michael Claydon is.
In 1970 (van mei tot september) was Joanna Lumley kortstondig gehuwd
met de comedy schrijver
Jeremy Lloyd bekend van 'Are You Being Served?' en ''Allo
'Allo!'. Ze acteerden samen in de film 'Games That
Lovers Play' (1970) en de televisieserie 'It's
Awfully Bad for Your Eyes, Darling' (1971).
In 1986 huwde ze de dirigent Stephen
Barlow.
Joanna Lumley is al jaren vegetariër en steunt 'Compassion
in World Farming' en 'Viva!'.
