14 days trip (arrival in Gao, departure from Mopti (Point Afrique))


This trip is only possible from December till March, when you can find charter flights from Point Afrique to these cities.

Day 1 : Welcome at the airport of Gao by Malibou. Shuttle to hotel Sahara Passion. After a short break visit of the city: the tomb of the Askia's (the old kings) and the big mosque. Dinner in the city.

Day 2-3-4 : After breakfast we go by pinasse (typical Niger-boat), direction Timbuktu. During this trip we will visit several Sonraï and Bozo villages alongside the river Niger. Leaving Gao we will visit the 'Pink Dune'. We will sleep on the banks of the River in bivouac or in tents. In the evening of day 4 we will arrive in Timbuktu. Overnight stay and dinner in hotel Bouktou.

Day 5 : Visit of Timbuktu, the mysterious city: its old mosques, markets and libraries well known because of the ancient manuscripts. After a short siesta in the hotel, a camel ride to a Tamashek village (also possible by 4x4). Traditional evening in Touareg ambiance and an overnight stay in the settlement.

Day 6 : After breakfast departure by camel to the Tamashek encampments of Tesheq and Findria. These Sahel encampments are always built close to a well. The population moves on in function of these wells. Lunch in the shadow of a tree, close to a well so you can experience how people meet each other and how the herds are slaked. At twilight we drive back to Timbuktu and we will enter the town through 'the gate to the dessert'. Dinner in restaurant Amanar.

Day 7 : After breakfast we drive you with a 4x4 direction Hombori, through the natural reserve of Gourma. Depending on in what period we are traveling we can find one or more families of elephants. Lunch in a Tamashek settlement. At fall we will arrive in Hombori. Dinner and overnight in hotel Campement.

Day 8 : After breakfast we will visit the old settlement of Hombori and 'the hand of Fatima', a massive rock shaped like a hand with fingers high of 200 to 300 meters. We will lunch in Douentza. At fall we will arrive in the Dogon-valley. Dinner and night rest in the campement of Bamba.

Day 9 : After breakfast and visiting the village Yenduma, we drive to Nombori to have dinner and night rest in a campement.

Day 10 : After breakfast you start an optional trecking to Duru, 16km. In Duru you will have dinner and night rest in a campement.

Day 11 : Departure with our 4x4 to Mopti. Dinner and night rest in hotel Doux Rêves.

Day 12 : After breakfast we will leave for Djenné. We will have our lunch in the hotel Campement. A guided visit of Djenné. Dinner and night rest in hotel Campement.

Day 13 : After breakfast we will leave for Mopti and have lunch in the restaurant Yeredemé (run by the association of unmarried mothers of Mopti). A guided visit of Mopti; the harbour, the moorings of the pinasses (typical boat of the Niger), the market in the harbour, the handicraft market, the mosque. Sundown and dinner in bar-restaurant Bozo with view on the activities on the banks of the Niger. Overnight in hotel Doux Rêves.

Day 14 : A day off, but a guide of Malibou will stay at your disposal. We drive you and your luggage to the airport.

Included in the price: shuttle from and to airport, trips by 4x4, the ferry and the boat trip, overnight stays with half pension, local guides, a French or English speaking guide all along your trip.

Not included in the price: the flights, insurance, the drinks with your meals in hotels and restaurants, lunches.

Recommended airlines:
Brussels Airlines goes twice a week directly from Brussels to Bamako.
You also can fly with Air France, Tunis Air and Royal Air Maroc to Bamako.
Point Afrique offers some charter flights.

You can buy a visa for Mali at the Embassy of Mali in Brussels. The vaccination for yellow fever is mandatory.
Don't forget to bring with you repellent for mosquitos, sleeping bag, cotton clothes, casual shoes, your pharmaceutics and sun oil. You don't need to bring your tent with you.
