Chris has been a nurse for 37 years . Jos was a teacher and a fireman since 1972 until 2007. We are married for 48 years and retired now . We have one son , and three lovely grandchildren . Probably , you gonna hear them when they arrive ! We have build our home a few years after our marriage in 1971. Many years later , when our son met his wife , they have lived here on the first floor during 6 years . Two of our grandchildern are born here. A few years ago our son build his own house and our house became to large . We had the choice : sell our home or stay . Because we like to meet people , we started a Holiday-appartment . Our neighbours : Turnhout ( at 8 km from Merksplas ) is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of Antwerp . The municipality comprises only the city of Turnhout proper. On January 1 , 2006 Turnhout had a total population of 39,791. The total area is 56.06 km² which gives a population density of 710 inhabitants per km². Turnhout, is famous as the world center of the playing card and is both legally and administratively the capital of the Kempen region and of the local district. It is also the economic and cultural center of its region wih more than 40 schools. There is also an important services sector with 2 hospitals, a 2 stage theatre and an 8 screen cinema. Museum of playing card : Nationaal museum van de Speelkaart - beguinage : The beguinage of Turnhout (13 th century) is an unique oase of peace in the middle of the town.Together with twelve other Flemisch beguinages is it since 1998 on the list of Culturel Word Heritage of the UNESCO. Baarle-Hertog (in French Baerle-Duc ) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp . The municipality only comprises the town of Baarle-Hertog proper. On January 1 , 2006 Baarle-Hertog had a total population of 2,306. The total area is 7.48 km² which gives a population density of 308 inhabitants per km². Baarle-Hertog is noted for its complicated borders with Baarle-Nassau in the Netherlands . In total it consists of 24 separate pieces of land. Apart from the main piece (called Zondereigen ) located north of the Belgian town of Merksplas , there are twenty Belgian exclaves in the Netherlands and three other pieces on the Dutch-Belgian border. There are also seven Dutch exclaves within the Belgian exclaves. Six of them are located in the largest one and a seventh in the second-largest one. An eighth Dutch exclave lies in Zondereigen. The border is so complicated that there are some houses that are divided between the two countries. There was a time when according to Dutch laws restaurants had to close earlier. The city and municipality of Antwerp ( Dutch : Antwerpen ; French : Anvers ) is a centre of commerce in Belgium and the capital of Antwerp province , in Flanders , one of Belgium 's three regions. Antwerp's total population is ca. 461,496 (January 2006) and its total area is 204.51 km² with a population density of 2.257 inhabitants per km². The agglomeration has a population of about 800.000 (municipality: 461,496 (2006), metropolitan area : ca. 1,225,000). Antwerp has long been an important city in the nations of the Benelux both economically and culturally. It is on the right bank of the river "Schelde" which is linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde . Antwerp's port , which is one of the world's largest, has a high level of cargo shipping and oil refineries traffic, and in Europe , only Rotterdam 's port is larger. Families of the large Hasidic Jewish community have traditionally controlled Antwerp's global centre of the diamond trading industry, although the last two decades have seen Indian and Armenian traders become increasingly important. De Vlaamse Leeuw ( Dutch : The Flemish Lion) is the national anthem of Flanders and the Flemish national flag. Flanders is the most populated Region and thus largest Community in the federal kingdom of Belgium Flemish is the term for the dialects of Dutch spoken in Flanders or, alternatively, the forms of Dutch spoken in Belgium . The latter definition, though being the most common, is considered too precise by linguists , since the political borders seldom entirely correspond to linguistic ones. The official language in Belgium is Standard Dutch (i.e. the Dutch standard language ), along with French and German . In contrast to countries where the names of languages may have a more purely descriptive significance, in Belgium language is at the basis of a long political emancipation struggle.
The Walloon Region occupies the southern part of Belgium . Its major cities and towns include Liège , Namur , Charleroi , Mons , Tournai , Verviers , Arlon , Bastogne , Wavre , Dinant , Peruwelz and Eupen . French is the official language in most municipalities. German (with French facilities ) is the official language in nine eastern municipalities which belonged to Germany until 1918 and now form the German-speaking Community of Belgium . Several French-speaking municipalities have facilities in Dutch or German (or both). In a survey conducted by the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-La-Neuve and published in June 2006, only 19% of Wallonians stated that they were able to speak Dutch . In contrast, 59% of respondents from Flanders claimed to speak French . The variety of French spoken in Wallonia is Belgian French , which differs from the standard French of France to various degrees depending on the speaker. The French language used in the administration and in the media is very similar in Belgium and in France. One notable difference is the use of the words septante (70) and nonante (90) in Belgium, as opposed to soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix in France.
