Return-journey

We spend a lot more time in Debrecen than we thought we would spend. That is why there wasn't a lot of time left to see something from the south of the country. But we could still visit a lot the last days of our journey.

Besides the Hortobágy Puszta there's also the Bugaci- or Kiskunság Puszta. We drove to Bugac and found the Big Bugaci Csárda. Prince Charles and Diana were once guests here. Now we were there almost alone, the touristical season had clearly ended. It was also very quit on the camping in the neighbourhood. We had the whole enclosure for us alone.

The next day, on our way to Pécs, we went to Moháks Memorial Park in Sátorhely. It there in memory of the battle of 1526 against the Turkish. More than 15.000 people were killed than. (The Turkish won). The park consists of many wooden piles with figures carved from it. It are for instance warriors and horses.

Terry next to one of the piles. Toby marked his territorium somewhere...

In Pécs we visited the Saint-Peterscathedral, one of the most important medieval monuments of Hungary. The oldest parts are from the 11th century. Unfortunately there was a scaffolding around one of the four towers, but that was soon forgotten the moment we saw the unique interior.

We also walked to a 16th century Turkish mosque, probably the nicest Turkish building remained in Hungary.

We spend the night on a camping at Lake Balaton. It was very quit at the end of the season.

After our very good night we continued to Héviz. The hot spa situated here is the largest natural hot water lake in Europe. The water is 35°C, it contains a little sulpher and is slightly radio-active. It's the place to be for people suffering from rheumatism. Everybody must use a swimming-belt and the maximum time of a bath is 20 minutes. That is because of the radio-activity. It's an unforgetable experience to float between the water-lilies.

Because Toby and Terry were not allowed near the lake, Ann went for a 20 minute bath first and then Stefan. We had a disposable watertight camera that was very usefull to make some pictures. Even a self-portrait was possible...

After our visit to the spa of Héviz it was really time to go home. It would take a long road before Toby and Terry could lie in their own places at home.

In the end we could see a lot of Hungary in a little less than four weeks. Toby and Terry were in the country of their ancestors. We were happy and dreamed of a continuation...
