19 and 20 December 1944.

Plans completed for defense of GEY area (022398) completed and teams organized to ride tanks, and TDs in event regiment is called on to move to repel counterattack. No change.

21 December 1944.

No change in tactical situation. 1st Bn completed move basic to assembly area vic of GROSSHAU (055388). Regiment (-2d Bn) in one assembly area. Defensive and counterattack plans continued to be improved and supplemented.

22 December 1944.

Colonel Walthour relieved of assignment and duty as Regimental Commander, and Colonel Foster assumed command of 330th Infantry at 0920. The 330th Infantry given mission of relieving elements of 5th Armored Div. from the boundary W of 331st Inf running from (113033) W to (103395) - (090394) to a boundary on S with 4th Cav Group running E-W from (098370) - (087379).

Boundary between battalions (112376) NW to (100382). Third Bn on Right and 1st Bn on left. The 2nd Bn was relieved from attachment to 5th Armd Div at 2300 and reverted to Regimental Reserve vic (093336) upon being relieved by 3rd Bn at 2200. The lst Bn relieved elements of CCA in their sector at 2150. The 3d Bn established contact with Co A at 2305.

Sector quiet. 3d Bn received light mortar fire in effecting relief; no casualties resulted. 323d FA Bn in direct support Regimental CP closed into new location (065393) at 1235. One platoon AT Co attached to each 1st and 3rd Bns.

23 December 1944.

The 1st and 3rd Bns continued to make adjustments in their defensive positions. The 1st Bn made contact with 331st Inf on left. The 2nd Bn occupied reserve position and carried out reorganization and rehabilitation. Co B, 772d TD Bn (T) reported in and began reconnaissance to support the regiment. Co C, 774th TK Bn attached. Because the 5th Armd Div was withdrawn from line before having accomplished mission of clearing ground on W bank of ROER River in the sector, the 330th Infantry was ordered to attack and clear enemy from W bank of ROER in its sector. Mission of 1stBn: Clear enemy in Z of A, occupy town of WINDEN (113385) to W bank of river and destroy bridge at (116389). Mission of 3d Bn: Clear enemy from high ground at (109374) and occupy ground to W bank of ROER River in its sector and destroy bridge at (112373). The 2d Bn remained in reserve and support of 1st and 3d Bns with fire from present positions. At 1615, Co C Launched attack from its positions at (111391) towards S edge of WINDEN (114389) and B Co from positions at (11053818) attacked E toward WINDEN, and Co A sent one platoon to attack the town from the S. Both B and C Cos met heavy small arms and artillery fire. Co C got into N edge of town at 1730, but B Co was unable to reach town before nightfall. The 3d Bn from present positions along crest of hill at (106374) attempted to send engineer party accompanied by Infantrymen of Co I to blow bridge at (112373). This party encountered heavy artillery and small arms fire from across, river and were unable to reach bridge. 1st Bn. 331st Inf attached in present position at 2400.
