Everything
consists of energy, both living and non living matter as thoughts,
emotions, and intentions. The human body is literally held together
by energy and energy is also flowing more or less freely in and
around the body. These energy flows are linked to our physical,
mental and emotional state; in an ideal situation they are smooth and
balanced, in case of disturbances they are off balance or blocked.
In the east, these energy flows are extensively studied and
schematically depicted, and these models form the basis of various
forms of oriental medicine.
The
major hubs of energy in the body are known under the name of chakras,
each with their own sphere of influence in body and mind. Let us not
forget however, that even the most detailed model is not
sufficient to grasp a complex living being and all possible
interactions with its environment.
By the term
energy work we mean consciously giving attention to the energy
in and around our bodies, allowing a spontaneous response to
them. The emphasis is on spontaneous, feel how the body wants to move
as an authentic response to the energy present in the here and now.
As opposed to coming up with possible actions in the (near) future,
and the pursuit of particular outcomes.
Fortunately,
the energy (like everything in nature) from itself tends to return
to its most balanced state. Therefore someone who can leave
thinking out of it and let himself be guided by the energy
itself will automatically "do" the right things, even
without knowing what the possible problems or obstacles are.
Actually, it is not really doing something, but rather letting
it happen while you are as it were only a spectator of the whole
thing. In this way a beneficial effect can be achieved, sometimes
even in a first session, although I must say immediately that
ingrained patterns cannot be changed permanently by a one-off
activity. Also from energy work therefore, most benefits
can be expected by regularly practice.
Although
energy work certainly has a therapeutic value, this is not my main
motivation to "do" it ("let it happen" is
actually a better expression) For me it is more important that energy
work offers a different perspective on the world and on myself.
By
repeatedly making things happen without the intervention of thought,
I learned to put thought into perspective myself. I learned to trust.
For someone who is
frequently engaged with energy work, it is difficult to miss
the fact that everything is interconnected,
and that we are not the body or the mind.
At
least this has greatly helped me to grasp the teachings of spiritual
masters and traditions and to convert them from intellectual
knowledge to a living experience. Insights and experiences of
profound unity came to me almost always during or shortly after
engaging in energy work.
