WALL TABLETS

Along canals and in other parts of the city standing beautiful buildings with often magnificent gables. Remarkable is that many houses have an in relief sculptured stone in its facade. Before house numbering was introduced the occupants acquainted themselves by means of such a wall tablet, that often had their profession as subject. Other favourable subjects were for instance names of cities, of animals, historical and religious images. After introduction of house numbering the stones were superfluous and disappeared. Luckily a large number has been saved. Some of them are placed in the St. Luciënsteeg facade and also in Begijnhof you can admire some old wall tablets.
