Irish Times: Lennan entries

On this page you will find all references to Lennans in the Irish Times archives. Most are to the William Lennan but we see J. Hinkson snapping at his heels in the 1860s and P.J. Lennan in the 1880s and 90s. But a few other Lennans, even pickpockets, are also recorded.

18611230 LORD MAYOR ELECT. William Lennan Begs to announce that he has completed the State Harness for the In-coming Lord Mayor, and it will be on view at his Establishment 29, Dawson-street, until the 1st January, 1862.
18620102 INAUGURATION OF THE LORD MAYOR FOR 1862. ……The undress chariot, in which were seated some of the younger members of the Lord Mayo's family, is a barouche landau capable of being used either as an open or close carriage. Mr. Lennan, of Dawson-street, manufactured the harness. It is handsomely ornamented with silver mountings, armorial crests and mottoes. ...
18620419 THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION. Amongst the Dublin manufacturers …We have had much pleasure in examining the contributions in harness, saddlery, &c, manufactured by Mr. William Lennan, of 29, Dawson-street, for the exhibition. In the fullest acceptation of the term they are first class productions in the department of skilled labour to which they belong, and illustrate how competent Irishmen are to excel, if they only get fair play and proper encouragements. A double set of state harness, richly mounted in Nickel silver, a set of chariot, and a set of brougham harness, similarly decorated, are worthy of high praise. Every part of them is finished with the greatest care, and the sewings are more even and regular than we ever remember to have seen in articles of the kind. The ornaments are exceedingly rich, without being tawdry or heavy. A curiosity is presented in a set of "trotting harness," which notwithstanding that it is strong and durable only weighs 8lbs. This extreme lightness is produced by the excellence of the material used, and by the absence of everything not necessary for a horse required to go at great speed in harness. In the daddlery department another curiosity is shown in a racing saddle, weighing only 2 lbs. It is full racing size, and is put out of hands in a most creditable manner. A highly ornamented side saddle, quilted all over, and furnished with spring leaning head and safety slipper, demands marked commendation, as do also the assortment of hunting and steeplechase saddles, as well as a "breaking-in" tackle, most ingeniously contrived all of which will be exhibited by Mr. Lennan, who now, as on former occasions, has done much to prove to strangers that Irishmen have no superiors in skilled labour.

18631110 International Exhibition, 1862. William Lennan at the request of his numerous patrons, is induced to correct certain statements, which have appeared as advertisements, from parties who erroneously set forth that they have received the First-class Prize in the Department of Saddlery and Harness. The enlightened jury, in awarding the Prizes, only named Mr. Merry, St. James's street, London and William Lennan, Dawson street, Dublin, as entitled to the highest award, viz: "For excellence of quality in Saddlery and Harness" - See Jury Awards, Class 26, Section H. Lest such advertisement should mislead the public William Lennan begs attention to the following opinions of the Press - From the London Correspondent of Saunders's New Letter, Oct 22nd. 1863 - "In the Saddlery and Harness Department there is one case, concerning which I feel bound to echo the verdict of the Commissioners. There is nothing of the sort in its comments in the whole building and consequently, in the whole world; and the Commissioners have left it on record that it has only one equal; no other exhibitors in that line save Mr. Lennan and Mr. Merry, of St. James' street, having received a Medal for the double proficiency in both and Saddlery and Harness. Mr. Lennan's case is quite a study." Saunders's Oct 24th 1862 - "Mr. Lennan, Saddler, Dawson street - We find, on reference to the Official Catalogue of the International Exhibition, pages 255 and 257, that our Correspondent was correct in his statement that Mr. Lennan and Mr. Merry were the only two exhibitors awarded ?one fall? for "excellence in quality of Saddlery and Harness." W L begs to submit the following opinions of the Press which prove such statement to be incorrect, and calculated to mislead the public: - From the London Correspondent of Saunders's New Letter, Oct 22nd. 1862 - "The Commissioners have left it on record that it has only one equal; no other exhibitors in that line save Mr. LENNAN and Mr. MERRY, of St. James' street, London, having received a Medal for the double proficiency in both and Saddlery and Harness." 18640128 BELL'S LIFE IN LONDON, speaking of the late International Exhibition:- " Across the Channel, Mr. Lennan, Saddler to her Majesty in Ireland, exhibits a very handsome caseful. There is a set of pair-horse harness very richly chased in silver, plated on solid nickel, some light pair-horse and brougham harness of excellent workmanship. There is a lady's full elaborately quilted side-saddle, with spring leaping head and a patent safety slipper stirrup. This is the one we alluded to just now when speaking of Latchford's. The slipper sole is a fixture, and turns on a swivel, forming part of an independent stirrup itself, working through the bow of the larger one by means of a spring. In the event of a rider becoming unhorsed, the foot carries the moveable slipper round with it, and throws the foot quite clear. Its effectiveness is certain, and we can warmly recommend it to all single-stirrup equestrians. There is a choice show of gentlemen's saddles - the Somerset full quilted, a couple of hunting saddles, a steeple chaser, and a racing saddle, completely mounted, weighing only 2 lbs. There is a set of trotting harness only 3 lbs weight and a nice handy looking set it is: there is also a double rein snaffle bridle for preventing horses running away, but we could not get to examine it. Mr Lennan fully sustains a leading position for the trade from the Irish metropolis." - India, Australian and Military Outfits executed on the shortest notice.
18640222 Coachman, or Groom and Coachman, a steady active Man, who thoroughly understands his business in all its branches, is a careful, steady driver in any harness, attends table well, understands the training of horses, character and capabilities will bear the strictest inquiry from fact and former employers, no objection to the country and would take a weekly situation. Address LM. Mr. Lennan, 29 Dawson street.
18640512   BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT. Upwards of One Thousand at present in use. Lennan's Patent Safety Stirrups for Ladies and Gentlemen. They may be seen attached to almost every saddle in Rotten row. "It is so contrived that in case a lady or gentleman is thrown from a horse, the foot becomes immediately disengaged. At the Exhibition Prince Napoleon purchase one for the Empress Eugenie and another for the Princess Clotilda" - Court Journal, August 2nd, 1862. I should not be doing my duty to those of my fair readers who are equestrians were I not to point out the manifest advantages of a most valuable and useful invention - vix 'Lennan's Patent Safety Stirrup,' now patronised by the Royal Family and all the leading lady equestrians in Europe and America" - The Englishwoman's magazine, June, 1863. 18640526 Report on Royal Dublin Society Exhibition: "...and the miscellaneous collection of hardware exhiliteed by Mr. Whitestone. From this the distance is short to Messrs Lennan's spendid sets of harness and 'safety stirrups' and the splendid marble chimney pieces of black Kilkenny, green Connemara, and Victoria red marble sent in by Mr.Brookes....... From time to time musical performances will enhance the attractions of the place, and there is little doubt that to those who care little for the objects of the Royal Dublin Society, the building will form an agreeable lounge during the long summer months, while to strangers it will show the quickest and best mode of promoting the prosperity of Ireland."

18640601 THE IRISH EXHIBITION: "Yesterday the building presented a much more animated appearance than upon the previous day; and from three o'clock until the hour of closing, the centre hall formed an agreeable promenade during the performance of the constabulary band under Mr Hardy's skilful direction. Its is understood that the exhibition will be opened this evening by gaslight for the first time....and Mr. Dunne will wield the baton of conductor over a chorus of 40 voices. We have already noticed the departments occupied by the linen and woollen manufacture, and by Irish furniture and ironmongery. Next in the catalogue is the place allotted to SADDLERY. In this department Mr Wm Lennan, of Dawson street, is the largest and foremost exhibitor. The excellence of his harness and saddles has obtained for him a reputation second to no other maker in the United Kingdom, and it will be within memory of those who visited the International Exhibition of 1862 that he was then awarded a medal on the same rank as Mr Merry, who is in London equally famous as saddler and sportsman. The stand which he occupies in the south aisle is stored with all the vaious articles known in the trade, bits of every variety, bridles and saddles of all sizes and models, harness suitable to every description of vehicle, from the light tandem phaeton to the slower and safer brougham. Most remarkable in these is admirable finish of workmanship and close adaptation to the purposes for which they are intended. Nothing more light, convenient, and serviceable could be devised than the pair of horse harness, especially ordered for this Exhibition, by Viscount Guillamore, with its handsome mountings of silver plate. It must be remembered that the collar, the straps, and all the other pieces of work which enter into the composition of this and other sets of harness, sent in by Mr Lennan, are cut and sewed by hand, and that machinery had nothing whatever to do with these close and regular seams. The various styles of which good saddlery admits are shown by contrasting this with the brown buggy harness ordered by Mr. Brooke, and neatly mounted in silver. The Earl of Charlemont has ordered a set of brougham harness which possesses all the appearance of strength and durability, and exhibits the admirable finish and elegant taste, which have made Mr Lennan's reputation in his own trade. In the tandem harness, made for Sir Capel Molyneux, Mr Lennan has managed to get rid of many of the heavy rand cumbrous straps that hampered the horses, without adding to the security of the vehicle. Tandem is somewhat out of fashion now, for the days when gentlemen held the whip artistically are gone by, and young men of rank in England more frequently try their hands at driving an engine than in urging a team of greys or chestnuts; but for those who fancy driving as an amusement, the harness purchased by Sir Capel Molyneux will give an idea of comfort and freedom from danger, which good taste will lead them to adopt for themselves. A set of trotting harness weighing only eight pounds will invite attention. On the other side of the stall a number of saddles, all displaying beautiful workmanship, afford sufficient range to the most elegant taste. Their great merit is their combination of strength and lightness. Twenty years ago who would have dreamt that a pigskin racing saddle could be made to weigh less than two pounds? A set of horsebreaking tackle introduces some new and clever contrivances. A very neat lady's saddle with a fawn coloured doeskin seat, shows careful and excellent work, and a bridle to prevent horses running away, is associated with a peculiarly ingenious bit, against which the hardest mouth would scarely protect a refractory animal. But of all the various devices which surround the stand, none will attract the eye of the visitor so soon as " the patent safety stirrup." Accidents in riding would be fewer and far less likely to be fatal, but for the fact that the stirrup frequently retains the foot of the fallen horseman, and drags him over the ground without the slightest possibility of his becoming disengaged until assistance arrives. Mr Lennan's stiirup is intended to remove this danger. Underneath the high arch of the stirrup is a second arch, lined with leather, and moveable in one direction only - the direction which the foot takes in being brought out. The foot rests upon a leather sole or pad, which greatly increases the comfort of riding. Should the equestrian, whether lady or gentleman, be by any misfortune unseated, the sole rapidly rises, lifts up the moveable arch and frees the foot. If this neat and admirable contrivance were the only improvement that Mr Lennan had introduced, he would still be abundantly entitled to the thanks of all who find in riding the healthiest, pleasantest, and most inspiriting exercise. Since the Exhibition opened he has received encouraging evidence of public approval, and on Monday last his Serene Highness Prince Weldeek visited the stand and ordered several saddles and a set of harness. Amongst other exhibitors, are Messrs Box and Co, of Middle Abbey street, who, in addition to a large assortment of saddles and harness, display the various materials of which they are composed.....

18650330 COURT OF INSOLVENCY - Yesterday (Before Judge Berwick.) In re Barron. The insolvent was a veterinary surgeon, carrying on business at Stephen's green. Mr. Wilson appeared to oppose his discharge on the part of two creditors named Lennan and Gavan. The insolvent it appeared brought an unfounded action against Lennan, his landlord, and acted also unfairly respecting Gavan. Mr. Levy, with Mr. Rynd, appeared for the insolvent. His Lordship disapproved of the course of conduct pursued by the insolvent, especially in respect of bringing the unfounded action. The court could not pass over such actions without retribution, and he would therefore remand him at the suit of Mr. Lennan, for four calendar months, and at the suit of Mr. Gavan for three. The Court having disposed of some uninteresting cases, rose shortly before five o'clock.
18650505 IMPROVEMENTS IN SADDLERY. Messrs William Lennan and Sons, of Dawson street, whose ingenious improvements and admirable workmanship in saddlery and harness have already obtained the highest distinction both in national and international competitions, have specially prepared for the approaching Exhibition, a number of specimens of native manufacture, which are likely still further to increase their reputation. Nothing could be more elegant and durable than the two sets of pair-horse harness, one mounted in silver and the other in brass; or than the Stanhope harness, whose rosettes are handsomely mounted with crests and monograms. All the mountings display excellent taste and though the style of ornament employed is of expensive description, there is nothing gaudy or inappropriate. The gig saddle is constructed upon a new design. Those who keep trotting horses will doubtless admire the harness which has been invented by Messrs Lennan for their special use. It weighs something less than 8 lbs, being as light as the best American trotting gear, but it is far superior in style and durability. Every variety of saddle will be shown, from that intended for racing, which weighs only 2 lbs, to the lady's saddle, beautifully inlaid with fawn coloured doeskin and providing the securest and most comfortable seat. Amongst the staunchest customers of this emminent Dublin firm are some of the most celebrated English jockeys, amongst whom most notable during the present week is Harry Grimshaw, who rode the winner of the two thousand guineas at Newmarket. There is a spendid assortment of hunting saddles of different weights and sizes. In all these articles the work is done by hand, thus insuring greater strength and permanency. The result of the enterprise and skill displayed by the Messrs Lennan is that foreign trade is constantly enlarging.
18650510 BRITISH DEPARTMENT. The first section is allotted to mineral products and mining operations and is found on the north-eastern gallery. ....Closely connected with the carriage section will be Section XVI, in which saddlery and harness will be exhibited. Here again our native manufactures show creditably. Messrs Lennan, Hudson, Hinkson, M'Mullen, and Trawford, of Dublin; Blackwell, Oxford-street, London; Catanach, Bankfoot, Perthshire; Cooper, York; Newton, Walsall; Lloyd, Newcastle street, Strand, London; Grey and Son, Edinburgh; and Booth and Fox, Hatton-garden, London, are the most prominent exhibitors. Mr Hudson of Dawson street, displays some capital specimens of harness, which are not only neat and strong in point of workmanship, but exceedingly appropriate in point of style. Mr Hinkson, of Dame-street, has never shown a more creditable assortment of saddlery. The case furnished by Messrs Lennan and Sons, of Dawson-street, contains some marvellous specimens of ingenuity in design and skill in handiwork, and it would be strange indeed if their trotting harness, weighing only eight pounds, and their racing saddles, each of which weighs two pounds, do not obtain numerous admirers. The exhibitors of saddlery number fourteen. In the 26th section which is ascribed to the manufacturers of furniture, no fewer than 37 firms compete.....

The business of the Special Commission for the trial of Fenian prisoners was resumed yesterday morning in the Court-House, Green street, by the Lord Chief Justice, Mr Justice Fitzgerald, and Baron Deasy......The Lord Chief Justice summed up..... The Lord Chief Justice: Has the prisoner Doran anything to say? Doran: My lords, I have got much to say. Of course, I could not follow in the same strain of eloquence as my fellow countryman and fellow-patriot expressed himself in. But I am also consigned to an early grave - cut off in the vigour of manhood by falsehoods sworn there - false as God is true. In relation to Sheridan, he sat there with a smile on his countenance, and swore that I commanded the riflemen; or in other words, acted as aide-de-camp to the conspirators who were under Lennan, whoever Lennan is, I do not know. He also stated that I demanded the surrender of the barrack at Glencullen in the name of the Irish Republic......The Lord Chief Justice then proceeded with great solemnity to pass sentence of death upon the prisoners.....for the highest crime known to the law, that of high treason against the Queen your lawful Sovereign...

18670612 VALUABLE INVENTIONS - NO MORE RISK WHILST DRIVING OR RIDING. LENNAN'S SAFETY DRIVING REINS - Runaways and Kickers Mastered. This most useful invention prevents all accidents by horses. With it running away, bolting, or kicking of a horse is utterly impossible, whilst in appearance nothing more than an ordinary set of reins is perceptible. Lennan's Patent Safety Stirrups, for ladies and gentlemen's saddles, admitted to be the most comfortable and effective stirrup ever introduced. The flattering testimonials being daily received of these inventions give the greatest confidence in recommending their use. Descriptive circulars, with engravings of the above, sent free by post on application. W LENNAN, Saddler to her Majesty, Dawson street, Dublin. London Agent - Mr W H MARTIN, Saddler &c, 194 Oxford street.
18671018 LENNAN'S SAFETY DRIVING REINS AND LADIES' PATENT SAFETY STIRRUPS. - Two very important requirements among those having management of horses are now supplied by Mr. Lennan, saddler and harness manufacturer, of Dawson-street, Dublin. The safety drivings reins appear to be an ingenuous and useful invention, intended to prevent horses from running away, kicking or bolting. It is an extension or modification of the bearing rein; intended, however, for being attached to the saddle, it is extended though the ordinary reins, which are tubular, to the hands of the driver, giving him perfect control over the horse, however vicious or hard-mouthed he may be. Under all circumstances these reins can be made available instantaneously. They are in request by ladies, who can just as easily use them as the strongest horsemen. The other invention of Mr. Lennan, the patent safety stirrup, is intended to secure greater ease for the foot, while in case of accident the rider can at once be released from any risk or danger of being dragged along the road after being unhorsed. The new stirrup is being formed somewhat on the old pattern, but with the addition of a handsome moveable slipper attached to the iron by a simple but ingenious contrivance. The stirrup has also been adopted by Mr. Lennan for gentlemen. It is said that both inventions are now extensively used, and have received the patronage of many of the nobility and gentry, who have honoured the inventor with testimonials. - Vide the Liverpool Mercury.

18900429 IRISH WORK FOR ITALY AND THE UNITED STATES. We have seen at the establishment of Messrs. Lennan and Son, the well known saddlers and harnessmakers, of Dawson Street, some magnificent specimens of their manufacture, which they are about dispatching to Italy, Germany, and the United States of America. Prince Colonna di Sciarra, one of the wealthiest and oldest of the Italian nobility, has entrusted his order for four-in-hand coach harness to Messrs. Lennan, and oldest of the Italian nobility, has entrusted his order for four-in-hand coach harness to Messrs. Lennan, and some idea of the costly style of the outfit may be gathered when we state that the Prince directed the mounting, coronets, arms, &c., to be gold and silver plated, and, in carrying out the order, the finish, design, and materials used reflect the highest credit on the taste and resources of the ?item?. The standing territs and head territ are all surmounted with the Prince's coronet, cast in solid and richly chased gold, and the same are also introduced in a most effective manner on the ?rescettes?. The patent leather portions, which are all neatly hand-stitched, have the Prince's monogram in gold, surrounded with a silver garter, and a gold coronet on top. Mixed gold and silver in harness ornaments is a novelty, and the combination presents a pleasing and artistic appearance. The forehead bands are silver chain, 'Horse Guards' pattern, and look very effective in conjunction with the silver and gold plated rosettes. An extra set of collars is also provided, made of red patent leather, and are beautifully finished. Altogether the style in which this harness is got up is perfectly unique, and all who take an interest in such matters, as well as those anxious for the success of our native industries, should call at Messrs. 19720404 Reviewing the problems of a changing Irish economy. The rapid changes of the last 15 years or so have not been accommodated without some problems; some of these are discussed in a book published on March 31st by a group of economists from Trinity College, Dublin. ...It is comforting to learn from Mr. Lennan's essay, The Flexibility of Irish Taxes and Incomes, that there are built-in stabilisers. In particular about 10% of an increase in personal incomes is likely to be syphoned off by taxes, whilst about 30% of an increase in undistributed profits will go in tax. "..with constant tax rates the automatic response of tax yields with respect to income changes reduces those changes by about 18%." The net effect, in a period of inflation, is to reduce the inflationary effect of increases in incomes by something of the order of a fifth.
