Back in
1996 when we bought our Pulis we were encouraged by the lady who bred them to
take part in a show. The first show was a speciality show from the Belgian club.
Toby and Terry were best couple. They were only puppies then!
This made
us decide we wanted to do some more shows. We did some of the major shows in
Belgium like the Eurodog Show in Kortrijk, the shows in Oostende and Gent and of
course Brussels Dog Show (back then in 1996 this was necessary to become Belgian Champion).
When both
Toby and Terry were Belgian Champion we wanted them to be International
Champion. So we did a show in Holland and one in France. We also did a show in
Hungary (Debrecen), which was a great experience.
All the
time we did it because there are so little Pulis in Belgium. On some of the
shows Toby and Terry were the only ones. If we aren’t there, the people who
visit the show don’t see Pulis. And they may never know the breed. That is why
we take part in shows. We are not breeders, so we don’t “need” the title
for that reason.

Eurodog
1999
To become Belgian Champions back in 1996, Toby and Terry needed three C.A.C.’s of which one had to be the Brussels Dog Show. There had to be two different judges, but in our case, we never had one judge twice, so this was no problem. As you can see, both Toby and Terry became Belgian Champions.
Nowadays
dogs need four C.A.C.'s. The Brussels show is no longer necessary, but C.A.C.
won there count twice. There need to be three different judges.
And the
international shows we did:

Douet 2000
To become
an International Champion, a dog needs three C.A.C.I.B.’s, in three different
countries, with two different judges. So they are also International Champions.
When we
take part in a show it is obvious that we make sure our Pulis are in good
condition. The cords that drag on the floor are cut, their paws are clean and
their muzzle is fresh. We give them a bath and split the cords to the skin. When
we’re finished with that (and two days later) they look like this…

Eurodog 2002
It was a long time ago we did our last show. This had to change. So we registered for the Eurodogshow 2002 in Kortrijk-Belgium.
Toby & Terry were the only white Pulis. There was also a black Puli, but 'white' and 'other than white' are not judged together, so there was not a lot of competition. This does not mean that is was easy for Toby & Terry. They had to meet the breed standard. And there were not a lot of faults allowed to get their C.A.C.-C.A.C.I.B. If they weren't good, they didn't get anything, no matter if they were alone.
Toby was the first to enter the ring. He just loves to take part in shows (a lot of bitches to be found) and is always very enthousiastic: head high and sticking out the chest. But he's got a little 'problem' with his walk. He always starts to frisk in the ring. It's very hard to find the right tempo to avoid that. It shouldn't be avoided, it's typical Puli-behaviour, but not all the judges know this. A judge who doesn't know it will say it's a wrong walk. But the judge we had was once a Puli-breeder himself so it wasn't a problem at all. Toby got 'excellent', a first place and C.A.C.-C.A.C.I.B.
Next up was Terry. She's rather heavy and that's not so good. The lenght of her cords on her back is short (she bites them off) and that's not good too. On top of that she doesn't want to stand up in the ring, she sits down all the time. We have to hold her up which is of course not a good view. But she's got nice black pigment and a good build. She also has a good walk. So she got 'excellent' too and became best bitch and got her C.A.C.-C.A.C.I.B.
Now it got exciting, they had to meet each other in the ring to chose 'best of breed'. This could be Toby (best appearance) or Terry (best walk). The judge decided to let us choose! He did prefer Terry, but the fact that she did not stand up was hard for him. We liked Toby in the ring of honour because he's so enthousiastic.
The Pastoral group has a large amount of breeds. Normally the judge makes a selection. Our judge also did this, he only let 8 breeds stay in the ring. Toby was one of them. Yes, we could stay a little longer. Toby had to walk (frisk) up and down once more. After all 8 dogs did this the judge made a next selection. Toby was once more in the selection. Unfortunately it was a selection to leave the ring...
After this good job from Toby, they could enter the ring together as a 'couple'. In the picture above you can see that Stefan is holding his foot under Terry's belly to keep her upright. The judge might have seen it too, because we didn't survive the first selection this time.
After all we were happy that we were there. A lot of people were able to see white Pulis and could even ask us some questions. A lot of prejudices are out of this world. That's what a show is all about, to let the public know the breed. And we had a nice day. And Toby & Terry surely too, they laid down in their benches and dreamed...
