We live in
Zeebrugge (Belgium), a coastal town near the Northsea. The beach is the only
place where we can let our dogs run free. And they like it! There is a
sand-beach and there are dunes.
The day
after we came home with our two puppies, way back in 1996, we went to the beach.
They were four months old and they knew their own names, so they came back if we
called them. We thought it would be fun for them to let them free. So we did and
Toby and Terry ran away from us. When they were far away, they realised they
were alone. Then something funny happened: they tried to find us and ran to
other people. When they found out these were not their people, they went to
another couple. And finaly after some more attempts they found us. Later this
happened again, but after a while they learned to recognise us amongst the
crowd.
Toby’s
real sheepdog nature shows when we are on the beach. Whenever Terry is too far
away from us he runs to her and brings her back. Terry knows it and when she
sees Toby approaching, she runs towards us as fast as she can.
That’s
the reason why Terry loves the dunes. She can go far away from us and Toby
doesn’t see her. And Toby hates it when a lot of vegetable stuff is trapped in
his coat, something that is guaranteed in the dunes. So he is not that fond of
chasing Terry, he just walks behind us.
Toby likes
to swim when it’s hot. We have to keep an eye on him, his coat is so heavy
when it’s wet that he might drown. When he just got into the water and his
coat still floats, he’s like a little carpet.
Whenever
it’s not raining and it’s dry (a rare situation in Belgium), we go to the
beach. Toby and Terry know that, so when they see the sun is shining, they bark
whenever we go to the door. Going to the beach is what they want!
Some of
our best pictures were made after the sun set.
When it is totally dark and we are on the beach the people who live near the
coast can see flashes all the time. That’s us and the pulis!
We also go to the beach in wintertime. It’s a little cold then but they don’t care. And it is also ideal for beautifull photos.
