PATCH 9TH DIVISION

60TH INFANTRY CREST

15 October 1944

Throughout the day the situation did not change materially.
The enemy continued to harass the position with mortar and artillery fire.

At 1600, C Company against attacked towards the pillboxes to the southeast. This time the tanks tried to come up, but the lead tank couldn’t get started and blocked those behind.
B Company made slight progress; C made none at all. The companies again withdrew.

16 October 1944

The morning was relatively quiet in the areas of B and C company. A Company prepared to attack with F Company, 47th Inf, on the west, to take the high ground to the south and southwest (007305). F Company came down a trail to the west, but it was held up for a hour, while the mines and booby traps were cleared to allow the tanks to come up.

At 0930, A Company, in a column of platoon, attacked and got some 200 yards, when it hit enemy machine guns and a strong point, at the fire break just northeast of the high ground (008307). The lead platoon maneuvered around it and to the position, getting 6 (?) prisoners and a machine gun. Less than a hundred yards farther on down, another point of resistance was met, and it likewise was reduced. It reached the objective before noon. In order to aid F Company, 47th Inf, however, A Company pushed beyond the objective an additional 200 yards. Here again, it hit enemy. 1st platoon was on the right and 2nd on the left. The 3rd platoon was swung around to the left of the 2nd platoon, and enveloped the enemy.

A pillbox to the front (004325?) gave opposition until its occupants saw the tanks of F Company, and then 19 of the enemy gave up. A Company then held its position, while F Company turned to the northwest against the pocket of enemy in that direction. The action was completed by 1315.

At 1330, A Company began to get relief, and about 1400, B Company was relieved. C Company had already pulled out of its forward position at 1200, and then moved north from its place near the crossroads. H Company, 60th, was among the relief. The battalion prepared to go to his area at 004320. By 1730, 2 companies of the 47th (F and G), pulled in from the north, and 2nd bn., 60th, moved in from the west to take over the position.
