The informetrics method SEMAC® is the result of attempts to surmount some weaknesses shown by current methods like factor analysis, multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis when applied to informetric data. It has been developed in 1999 by A. Peter Maaswinkel at the University of Antwerp. The research was under supervision of Prof. Dr. E. de Smet.

SEMAC® offers an alternative to innovation centred scientometrics and technometrics, for it takes in account both dynamic and static elements of the dates submitted to investigation. This is why it fits particularly well for social studies under historic scope.

The first analyses were done by means of a spreadsheet application. However, a software for Windows operating systems is currently being developed. SEMAC® was tested on the fields of education, history of science and art therapy. Proposals for cooperative research projects are considered.
