Het 29ste Open Internationaal Schaaktoernooi van Gent 

The 29th Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent

Uiteindelijk daagden 345 spelers op voor deze 29ste editie.  Nog steeds een respectabel aantal schakers maar toch opnieuw een terugval en dit voor het vierde jaar op rij.  Lange tijd terug was de KGSRL zowat de enige club die een groot zomertoernooi organiseerde, nu is het aanbod groot.  Er is het toernooi in Dieren, het nieuwe toernooi in Amsterdam enz...  We zullen moeten leven met deze concurrentie maar zijn ervan overtuigd dat de combinatie Gentse Feesten - Open van Gent een formule is die de tand des tijds zal doorstaan.

Het toernooi kende een probleemloos verloop al waren de laatste toernooidagen door de tropische warmte lastig voor zowel spelers als medewerkers.  Winnaar werd Alexander Dgebuadze met 8 uit 9.  gevolgd door 5 spelers met 7,5.  

Eventually, 345 players showed up for this 29th edition.  A downfall, for the fourth time in a row, though still a nice number of players of course.  A long time ago, the KGSRL was about the only club to organise such a big summer tournament.  Nowadays, the offer is huge.  You have Dieren, the new tournament in Amsterdam, etc.  We will have to cope with this competition, but remain convinced that the combination of Ghent festivities and the Ghent Open is a formula that will resist the test of time.  

The tournament went smooth, though the last days were difficult for players and employees due to the tropical weather.  The winner was Alexander Dgebuadze with 8 out of 9, followed by 5 players with 7,5 points.
