32nd Taminco Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent

Enquête Taminco Open Toernooi

Tijdens het 32^ste Taminco Open Toernooi van Gent heeft het bestuur een enquête afgenomen onder de deelnemers om te peilen naar hun mening over de toernooiformule en de organisatie. Tezelfdertijd hebben we een aantal ideeën van het bestuur van de KGSRL naar voor geschoven en gepolst naar de interesse van de deelnemers.

Hieronder staan de belangrijkste bevindingen van deze enquête weergegeven.

Wat vinden de deelnemers van het uurrooster?

Er waren een heleboel opmerkingen om het uurrooster te wijzigen: bepaalde ronden vroeger of later beginnen, meer of minder tijd voor het middagmaal, meer of minder tijd voor het avondmaal, wijziging van het tempo, etc. Kortom, iedereen heeft zijn eigen mening over een goed uurrooster en het lijkt niet mogelijk om iedereen gelukkig te maken.

Welke initiatieven zou u appreciëren?

Bespreking: De vraag naar warme maaltijden en/of ontbijt is er bij een kleine groep. Nevenactiviteiten zijn zeer sterk gevraagd. Er is geen consensus om het inschrijvingsgeld te wijzigen. Naar parkeerplaatsen is er ook geen duidelijke vraag, toch niet voor die prijs. Er is wel een zekere vraag om de partijen te laten meetellen voor ELO-verwerking, maar er is ook een tegenstand.

Redenen om niet deel te nemen werden nauwelijks opgegeven:

• Te veel ronden met grote krachtverhoudingen, niet voor rating

• Botsende vakantieplannen

Bespreking: De combinatie met de Gentse Feesten wordt als belangrijke motivatie voor deelname opgegeven. Daarnaast vind men de sfeer op het toernooi ook heel goed.

Opmerkingen of suggesties over het toernooi.

In deze rubriek worden heel wat complimenten gegeven over de kwaliteit van de organisatie (waarvoor dank!); er worden tevens een hele hoop kleine en grote suggesties gegeven om de organisatie nog vlotter te maken. We nemen al deze voorstellen ter harte en zullen ze gebruiken om de toekomstige organisaties nog beter te maken.

Opmerkingen of suggesties over de schaaktechnische kant.

Hoewel niet expliciet gevraagd, zijn er heel wat reacties gekomen op de schaaktechnische kant van het toernooi, meer bepaald het speeltempo en de mogelijkheid tot ELO-verwerking. Hier geldt dezelfde conclusie als voor het uurrooster: ieder heeft zijn eigen mening, een consensus vinden tussen al die meningen lijkt niet mogelijk. Aan een aantal bekommernissen kunnen we wel tegemoetkomen (bv. 1 forfait die een half punt oplevert, beperken ELO verschil per ronde); we zullen onderzoeken op welke manier we dit best kunnen doen.

Samenvatting

• De voornaamste teneur die uit de enquête volgt is dat de overgrote meerderheid van de deelnemers zeer tevreden is.

• De combinatie met de Gentse Feesten is een belangrijke troef; dit maakt het Open van Gent een feestelijk zomertoernooi. Dit is strijdig met het doorgeven van partijen voor ELO-verwerking.

• Er is een publiek dat de partij wil laten meetellen voor ELO-verwerkingen, maar er is ook een publiek dat dit uitdrukkelijk niet wenst.

• Er is een verdeelde mening over het uurrooster en over het speeltempo, paringssysteem, enz.

• Daarnaast zijn er nog een aantal algemene suggesties en bekommernissen waar we aan tegemoet dienen te komen.

Survey Taminco Open International Tournament

During the 32nd Taminco Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent, the committee conducted a survey among the participants in order to gauge their views on the tournament formula and the organisation. At the same time we presented several ideas of the KGSRL committee and explored the interest of the participants.

The most important findings of the survey are stated below.

What do the participants think of the schedule?

There were many remarks about changing the schedule: start certain rounds earlier or later, allow more or less time for lunch, allow more or less time for dinner, change the time control, etc. In other words, everyone has his own idea about how a good schedule should look like, and it seems impossible to make everyone happy.

Which initiatives would you appreciate?

Comment: A small group is asking for hot meals and/or breakfast.
There is great demand for recreational activities. There is no consensus to change the entry fee. Parking space is not really in demand, at least not for that price. There is, however, a certain demand for making the games valid for ELO, but we also encounter opposition on that matter.

What are the most important reasons for participating?

• Well-organised, time control, 5 days, Gentse Feesten

• Gentse Feesten + start in the afternoon + not valid for ELO

• To prepare for interclub matches

• Purely chess entertainment

• Short duration of the tournament

• Strong competitors

There were hardly any reasons for not taking part of the tournament:

• Too many rounds against opponents with great difference in strength, not valid for ELO.

• Conflicting holiday plans

Comment: Combining the tournament with the Gentse Feesten is an important motivation factor for participating in the tournament. Next to it, people enjoy the atmosphere at the tournament.

Remarks or suggestions about the tournament.

In this section there were given a lot of compliments about the quality of the organisation (thank you!); in addition there were given a lot of small and mayor suggestions to change the organisation for the better. We will consider all these proposals and use them to improve our future organisations even further.

Remarks or suggestions about the chess technical perspective.

Though not explicitly asked, there were many reactions about the chess technical perspective of the tournament, more precisely about the time control and about making the games valid for ELO. Here we can draw the same conclusion as for the schedule: everyone has his own opinion and it is not possible to make a consensus out of all these different opinions. We could however consider a few changes (e.g. 1 forfait for a half point, limit the differences in ELO per round); we will examine the possibilities to make these changes.

Summary

• The main conclusion of this survey is that a large majority of the participants is very pleased.

• Combining this tournament with the Gentse Feesten is an important trump card that turns the Open International Chess Tournament of Ghent into a festive summer tournament. This conflicts with making the games valid for ELO.

• There is a group of participants in favour of making the games valid for ELO, but there is also a group of participants that explicitly does not want to make the games valid for ELO.

• Opinions are divided on the schedule and the time control, the pairing system, etc.

• Furthermore, there are several general suggestions and remarks we should meet.
