Né en 1938, à Dilbeek, près de Bruxelles, Wieland Kuijken étudie le violoncelle au Conservatoire municipal de Bruges, et achève ses études, en 1962, avec le Diplôme Supérieur de violoncelle au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Parallèlement à ses études classiques, il s'intéresse très tôt, déjà, à la musique ancienne jouée sur instruments d'époque. A 18 ans, il étudie la viole de gambe en autodidacte.
Sa carrière musicale débute avec l'ensemble bruxellois Alarius (de 1959 à 1972). Simultanément, il est membre de Musiques Nouvelles, un groupe spécialisé dans la musique d'avant-garde, avec lequel il se produit partout en Europe.
Sa carrière internationale se poursuit avec de nombreux concerts et enregistrements, aux côtés de ses frères Sigiswald et Barthold, ainsi qu'avec Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Alfred Deller et d'autres.
Depuis 1971, il enseigne la viole de gambe aux Conservatoires de La Haye et de Bruxelles et siège régulièrement dans les jurys internationaux (Bruges, Boston, Utrecht). Il est membre de la Petite Bande depuis la création de cet ensemble et violoncelliste du Quatuor à cordes Kuijken depuis 1987. Wieland Kuijken a interprété maintes fois l'intégrale des suites pour violoncelle solo de J.S. Bach et les sonates et variations pour violoncelle et piano de Ludwig van Beethoven avec Jan Vermeulen.

Wieland Kuijken was born in 1938 at Dilbeek near Brussels. He studied cello and piano at the Municipal Conservatory in Bruges, concluding his studies in 1962 with award of the Higher Certificate in cello from the Royal Conservatory in Brussels.
In addition to his formal studies, he developed a special interest in the performance of old music on historical instruments. At the age of eighteen he began to teach himself the viola da gamba.
He began his musical career with the Brussels Alarius ensemble, with which he worked between 1959 and 1972. At the same time he worked with the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, performing avant-garde music throughout Europe.
Over the years he established a solidly based international career through numerous concerts and recordings with his brothers Sigiswald and Barthold as well as with Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Alfred Deller, Robert Kohnen and others. Since 1971 he has taught gamba at the Conservatories of the Hague and Brussels and has frequently served on the juries of international competitions held in cities such as Bruges, Paris, Boston and Utrecht.
He is a founder member of la Petite Bande, and since 1987 has been cellist with the Kuijken String Quartet. He has frequently performed the complete suites for cello solo by J.S. Bach and, together with Jan Vermeulen, Beethoven's sonatas and variations for cello and pianoforte.
