Huguette
Hamers: Graphics

Although at first she started as a painter (oil on
canvas) soon she went over to printmaking initially using the more
traditional techniques, such as vernis-mou (soft varnish), aquatint
(sugar-engraving), metal cut, drypoint and lithography.
Various workshops in Ostend and Liège (Belgium) and
Quebec (Canada) gave her the opportnity to discover "new" techniques
such as the use of photo sensivity material and liquid polyester (collography,
hand-made offset,
photolitho and photogravure).
Graphical techniques are used separately or in combination with each other.
Nevertheless she takes care not to let predominate the technique which must
serve the concept, not the opposite. Technique must always be an
instrument to express the underlying though and feelings in a better way, never
as a expression on itself.
The prints especially distinguish by their (intentional)
simplicity. Forms are reduced to their essence. She plays with lines and shapes,
with colour and non-colour and because of that she emphasises a new dimension to
something what at first sight seemed to be a figure.
The character of graphic art, namely its multiplying
possibilities, isn't hidden. She reuses the same theme (and/or the same plates)
in a other context or reduces the printings to a minimum. Sometimes she even
makes only one print.
Because of that series are made, in which each print
seperately is the result of the meditation over the whole. The ensemble of
lines, shapes and colour seems at first sight to be some abstract work, but
hides in fact more figures.
Nature, man, and man in nature have a central place in
her graphic works. Colour gets a symbolic value.
