Zaccaria led display's. Type 6 digits.

Intended for first generation = Shooting the rapids , Hotweels, and others..

Soon afther i designed the led display for Bally i found out that it could be done for Zaccaria the same way.The schematic is almost identical All we have to do to transform the Zaccaria display board to make it ready to steer the led display's , is to change 6 resistors, cut some away and add some jumpers.

Zaccaria has a few different types of display's , these for the early games have 6 digits, later games have more digits and the board is different..This pages are intended for the early game display's.

Starting the project.

We start with the replacement print that will carrie the 6 led display's. How to fix that and i create a desing for the printed circuit. Pictures shows it all...

A simple piece to fix the print

The print is 15 by 5 cm. The aluminium fixing hook is placed on the display board, there is enought room to drill a hole without touching any runs on the print.

The final print design

The hand made test print. I look out to find someone to make this print, without components( led display's and without the holes.) This way it will be at a very low price and ready for any D.I.Y.

Mounted with the led display's type MAN5750.

The connections are simple. Nor to many wires here thanks to the printed circuit. Orange wires are the different a,b,c,d... li,es. And white wires are the common anodes.

You can work without the special printed circuit board using an universal print. On the 7 digits pages there is an example how to proceed.

The adaptions of the display board.

What do we change on the original board to make it ready to drive led displays? Here are the changes.

Here we see the part where the digit selection is made ( digit 6 ) De changes to apply ( 6 times) are the removal of a diode D6 for digit 6, the replacement of a resistor by a jumper, here for digit 6 = R12 ,and the 140 volt line will be altered so it will have only 5 volts.

 

The figure on the led display is made up of 7 strait lines , here we see the steering of the 'g' line. So this changes will be done 7 times . Replace one resistor by a 100ohm , here R19,and again one jumper to place where R20 was. That's all there is to modifie.

Practical realisation.

Remove the row resistors R13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26. Replace R13,14,15,16,17,18,19 by resistors of 100 ohm's , and R20,21,22,23,24,25,26 by jumpers. ( blue arrow)

 

Next remove the row with diodes D1,D2,D3,D4,D5,D6, and the resistors R40,41,42,43,44,45. The place of the diodes stays empty and the resistors are replaced with jumpers.( yellow arrow)

 

The last thing to do is to cut of the arrival of the 140 volts.The 140 volts arrives at pin 19 of the input connector CN1, you see the run going to condenser C1. Cut this run near the connection of C1 and now connect C1 to the neartby +side of C2, a small jumper does the trick.This conclude the alterations. ( On the photo indicated with the yellow arrow the place wher the run is cut , and the jumper between +5 volts and C1.)

Connecting the display PCB at the excisting display board.

 

On the new print with the 6 led's you will find the seven lines a,b,c,d,e,f,g connect them with R13,14,15,16,17,18,19 .R13 for the a, R14 for the b and so on. The common of the display is connected to D1,2,3,4,5,6 the diodes where removed and the hole ( band side) is free to connect D1 for the units , D2 for the thens and so on. That's all there is to connect.

Adapting the 5 volts regulator

When installing 5 or 6 extra Led display's the 5 volts regulator will be extra charged. The 78H05KC can deliver 5 amps. The Zaccaria pinball uses only 1,5 amps. So there is sufficient reserve to drive the 5/6 LED display's.
