My Bear History

Hello world,

My name is Nadia Jacobs and I was
born in 1963, Antwerp - Belgium.

I still live near Antwerp nowadays
in a little village that,
coincidence or not,
is called
Berendrecht.

In Dutch, ''beren'' means bears,
''drecht'' is an old Dutch word meaning:
a place where one can cross the river.
Could it be that bears were crossing the
river Schelde, just were we live ??

I was always very creative but I never did any needlework until 1995,
when I got ill and had to stay home from work for several months.
It was then that I bought my first teddy-bear kit,
however it didn't look much like a bear when it was finished;
but I'm rather stubborn, so I kept on trying and after a while they
even looked like bears.

Then came the problem that I didn't find any patterns of the bears
I had in mind; ( I love and collect old bears ),
so I started developing my own.
After a while though, my house as well as my mothers,
was filled with all kinds of bears.

With cold sweat in my hands I went to a bear shop with my bears
and to my surprise they were quite enthusiastic,
my Ted's where adopted all over the world very soon.

My first show was in December 1998 in Germany and now
I do about 5 shows a year.
I can't spend as much time as I want on bear making,
because I still have another daytime job in a diamond museum,
but I'll never give up doing the shows because you make friends
from all over the world, and that's a very nice extra.

They're all rather "special characters".
All of them are one-of-a-kind or very small limited editions,
they all look if they have already lived a lifetime and have
been loved to death even though they're quite young.
However they do need a lot of love.

My biggest fans are my three cats, who love the bears
almost as much as I do, though my husband is also very
supportive and always goes with me to the fairs.

Maybe we'll meet once at a show.
Many bear hugs,

Nadia
