The Kit
Artists need to take a few items , but need is defined differently in the art world. One has to consider the climate and terrain and to select appropriate clothing and the best media to get the job done. DnD provide several check lists, (right) that might prevent panic mode before heading for the great outdoors.
If you are
flying to destination there will be other concerns to properly and
legally pack certain items that are fragile or combustible. We
recommend carrying onboard anything precious or irreplaceable--pastels,
(amber), the pencil your artist idol touched , the discontinued
paintbrush you\d die to find on ld stock somewhere. If it would
cause a problem if you arrive separately, carry it onboard if at all
possible.
With the our checklist you have a basis to help
you decide which are the most important or worth the (extra) weight to
carry around because you basically take an abbreviated studio on the
road. It's fun to figure it out and tweak the kit as you get more
experience. Make notes what works and doo or don't do that the next
time. Do mosquitoes love you? If you're going where they will find
you, prepare and go forth!
I've been in groups that never
stopped to eat or drink, some that tailgated more than painted and some
highbrows that took the time to set up high tea with crumpets and
actually produced beautiful paintings in grand style. With the
human factor, plein painting is never a dull occasion and almost always
'educational' in the best way--hands on and word-of-mouth.
