April 5: annual meeting in ostend Hioco/D-K/Gruze

As every year the united patacyclical malfaituers de pistologie brulé and gruzebureau came together at the Lafayette in Ostend for another stint of pictorial and picturesque performative interaction on the beach... to wit: Belomorkanal – the soviet cigarette dubbed after the Stalinist project linking Leningrad with Arc-Angel via the white sea... built by gulag inmates (BBLAG, directorate of BBK camps – had to think of the Beoordelingscomissie Beeldende Kunst when I read that...) so pretending to be for a bit anyway, members of the “Kanaloarmeyets” – a combination of z/k “krasnoarmeyets” (member of the red army) and/or “trudarmeyets” ( member of the labour army combined with the original “zaklyuchonny kanalarmeyets” – forced canal labour-inmate.... or something like that... obviously quite a few members thought of digging and brought along their spades... but there was already such constructive chaos at the beach (the municipality tore up the croisette, now everything is a mess... the main attractions cordoned off because of falling pieces of masonry from the casino, rubble from various earthworks and so we had to approach the beach the long way round...) in the end only a small symbolic incursion had been made by way of a mental exercise connecting Ostend with Arc-Angel – and the scholastic sympathies for exploited workers and regime critics... in fact the theme brought out some of the old soviets in us (Pjotr, Tolmatcheff....) and there were a couple of tracts declaimed on the sands bordering the north sea... as well as small acts of piracy (LL) seeing off a small armada of pages from a misdirected book that came to us via Sandwich... (home-age AW)  Homage was also paid to the illustrious dead of the watery canal, letters were read and some music was played in accompaniment... then the crew returned to the Lafayette for some serious sonoric disturbance and a bit of wriggling about before Hioco presented the ravenous crowd with his delicious sandwiches ... that were gulped down in a matter of minutes in order to keep up the pace of the dance until it was time to run for the train again....

coprod/intervention D-K at ' De Connectie' op Campo Santo / Gent 22 May 2009:

Due to circumstances Dialogist-Kantor of Bureau du Port/Fumoir could not attend the opening of ' de connectie' organized by the 'kunstnier' at the chapel 'Campo Santo' in Ghent, so a gruzemayer delegation was dispatched to do a stop-gap intervention: LL and Heini O were closest by (they were at OE-29 at the time) and presented two small interventions: 'klaagkleed' (wailing dress) and 'petit hommage blue mirrior oiseau brisé'.

coprod / intervenion Dialogist-Kantor (Bureau du Port/Fumoir) & associates (amongst others this office Gruzemayer)

La Bellone March 21st 2009

As part of the “composite” series (nr. 7) La Bellone invited Dialogist-Kantor who in turn invited some of the known associates to participate in a subsection of ‘Du gel sur les bourgeons’ entitled “Feiulle, Bouteille, Ein Vogel”... a title constructed by ‘methode esquis’ by the participants during the first production-meeting taking place at the Bureau Du Port’s kitchen under the watchful eye of B. Obama (at right in this picture)

From the outset a strategy of simultaneous digression was applied, and though each participant was aware of the other’s intentions throughout, hardly any reckoning was held with individual intention of the others, resulting in an ensemble made up of dislocated facets held together by shared defining edges, a serial staccato presented simultaneously. By the second meeting everyone had a rough idea of what each one proposed. For a technical run-through there was neither time nor inclination, and so we met again ‘sur scene’ or in situ if you will.

It wasn’t meant to be a rite of spring or anything to do with it at all, but in the end one might say it was a bit of a F... Luxus Happening... given a certain élan by the presence of the commercially astute wine-merchant and concept-subversive Kurt Ryslavy, who proceeded to sell off the pieces of wood being cut-as-you-wait by tree-doctor Serge Paternoster.

(during proceedings - photo Charlotte van Buylaere)

(the wood was leaf-less, the other trees were needled, posing the question of the ‘feuille’)  – originally La Titania Yalon was to wear such a fig leaf, but opted for a text (vignt printemps si longtemps) on her eve’s costume instead. The proposal of the fig leaf was done by Marc Rossignol, who in turn did a collaborative series of red ‘pathetical’ rings made from bottle tops, branded and recalculated extensively, while LL (deuxelles) held sway as well as could be at her office-window, having been somewhat overrun by the public, but her poetic intervention was eagerly whisked away by everyone who had the good fortune to acquire one of her translucent letters.

(Marc Rossignol, cercles pathetiques with cerfificate)

Dialogist-Kantor anchored the whole affair with a large painting of a ‘Vogel’ made with spent x-mas trees ( a unique method I presume ) as part of the needle-gathering ritual and subtitles  elles’ peint sa pin des sapins avec sa pins’ (what??) not quite but somewhere along those lines...

In all of this the De-Co-Con Age proposed by BG and executed by Heini Obst seemed perhaps a bit out of sync. It did however result from a technical problem that kept us busy and which in the end was superfluous. (tho it did re-connect to some degree with concerns from way back, and maybe will be reconsidered.)

Not quite sure how it happened, but by chance the reference to Velimir Khlebnikov stuck in mind during the preparations, here represented by the ‘Kapitan Khlebnikov’ a former soviet icebreaker now doing eco-trips around the (ant) arctic.

(Image from wikipedia)

especially or perhaps because of the discussions:

“Where the waxwings used to dwell

and the pine rees softly sway’d

a flock of  airy momentwills

flew around and flew away....”

another aspect was the zaoum-soundplay that might come in handy, especially the sound of cutting which seemed relevant to de-cocooning and de-co-con-age.

(and for some reason the wooden spoon worn by one of the Burliuk brothers around the time of the blue rider / slap in the face of public taste manifesto (1911/12?) ...

But there were all sorts of associations that were vying for attention and inclusion... so it was that there was an even further developed fragmentation of facets and slowly it seemed to become a fuzzy field of ideas rather than specific thought-lines. The Suit to be de-concocted (a throwback to the ‘concoctive surgery’ of a few years back) de-cocooned and deconstructed was by one Peter Weiss, who’s namesake theatre & filmmaker influenced me to some degree in he past: so here again the reference to identity and possible use as submersible also.

(Die Ermittelung version 63)

Making a blue-bridge jump from the past to the future-past by then donning the half-horse trousers from the remnants of Kalanag’s roaming show... something I want to get involved with this year... been keeping them for twenty odd years for something I guess.

(more on this in the near future)

The spatial construction in front of the performance-space ended up not really being used at all, since the public drummed in so close the video-projections didn’t have a chance to reach the screens suspended above – projecting on dark legs below the knees to no real effect...  bit of a pity since the space at La Bellone is perfect for such playful effects. next associate meet: Oostend 09 Lundi Paques.

recap/ august 2008: Messianic research...

Due to a lack of space at Bureau Gruzemayer, the good relations with the Bureau du Port in Brussels comes in handy for short-stop interventions such as this one by the finnish Messianic Research Center for Visual Ethics:

Monday 11th of August 08 at 6 pm in the "Fumoir" of the Bureau du Port, Brussels

they presented their 22nd experiment on time, - reflections of the individual on the horizon of the history of research

effacing the individual

Jeroen permentier projected a 16mm short of his called "Outlaw Rubedo", a real treat for any cinephile explorer...

Valentina presented a video about an old tree in Portugal, a visual fairytale...

and there was even some modern classic dance later on...

Background info...

Relations with the Messianic Research Center for Visual Ethics go back quite a ways... their first appearence at Factor 44 in 2005 ( the benelux investigation) was well recieved... since then delegations from F44 and the BdP have had the opportunity to participate in MRCVE-activities in Finland...

At the time they also did a short intervention at the Bureau Du Port:

here some elements from the former FOof and F44 sites...

Perf 06, Pori Finland

We were approached by members of the Messianic Research Center of Visual Ethics (MVET, Messiaanisen Visuaalisen Etiikan Tutkimuskeskuksen; see section 'recent', summer 2005) which had done a prestentation at Factor 44 as part of their Benelux-research last summer; to do a return-trip to the coastal town of Pori, Finland where they were involved with 'Tehdas' in the oraganising of a video-and-performance get-together 'Perf 06' at two locations,- the Galery 3K+H and 'Annis'... so we decided to send our delegation in two parts, one via Stokholm & the baltic states, one direct from Brussels to Helsinki...

Galery 3H+K is situated in one of the few remaining old wooden townhouses near the centre of town, which is mostly a modernist frre-for-all, making it a special place to be and giving us a very homely feeling right from the start. We arrived a day early to enable us to translate our theoretical preparations into a viable project for the perf-presentation. As usual, we had individually prepared possible pieces to fit into each other and become a coherent whole, but also as usual left some challenges to be finalized 'in situ'. Early on we decided to combine our video-projects into one short series of encounters and went to work.

Driving out the the harbour of Pori, some 10 miles down river, we thought we would have no trouble buying a fish, being surrounded by water on all sides and having seen all sorts of signs announcing various ways and methods to approach the work 'kala'... but that turned out to be more of a challenge than we expected... while pondering the deep-freeze fish-sticks at the local store in the fishing village at the end of the road, we were told that it would be best to drive back to town, since the locals ate their fish themselves... that is how it happende that our video-project became to be named " The flag is (actually) a fish".

From there on in the project became a series of slightly surreal associations involving a lady in a glass hat refering the Freud's decomposition of 'a man with a glass hat', a primitive sort of 'Ur-Mensch' aquiring a flag (fish) which was rather apt, since Finland was discussing the ratification of the Euro-constitution at that very moment, - a disgruntled and aging yuppie who loses his marbles and a freewheelin' shaker with nothing better to do than animate the ghost-town outskirts of the place.Chris Gillis was the Ur-mensch seeming washed ashore out of no-where...

PERF07 / Pori 18-19 May PERFO! / Tampere 22 May

Factor 44, or rather the former offices of ( see FOoF44-pages) sent another delegation to Finland to take part in the performance series organized by Tehdasry / MVET in Pori and in Tampere last years participation was pleasant enough for us to again get a group of six people together to make the trip to the high north...

The line-up to date as relayed by T.E.H.D.A.S. art association & NYTE is currently Morian (Vladimir Kosic) form Serbia, Michal Schreiber from Israel, Eva Ikart, Katrin Piile, Rodrig Kokla and Oliver Verev from Estonia,Finnish participants are MVET ( messianic research center for visual ethics), Costodians of Being Eero Yli & Vacuri Jouni Partanen, Juhuna Moisander ... and of course our combo-delegation of elements of the Former offices of F44, Bureau du Port's Dialogist Kantor with 'munder blackout effect, club-moralist DDV and videos by laird-Gosselé et al...
