x − x² moet zo groot mogelijk zijn. Noem dat verschil y.
y = x − x² = x(1 − x) bergparabool, nulwaarden 0 en 1
Het verschil y is dus het grootst voor x = ½
Dat verschil is dan zelfs positief : ½ − (½)² = ¼
