BRUSH UP ON YOUR BANGER TERMINOLOGY

Banger racing has almost a language of its own, with words you never hear in the other formulas. How many of these are you familiar with?

BANGERACK- a dedicated fan of banger racing. Recognised by Jacket/Anorak covered in badges from circuits visited.

BLITZ- term used to descibe any action in banger racing where a car is destroyed or disabled so that it is undriveable. Also the title of a magazine dedicated to banger racing.

BROWN TROUSERS- This is how a driver on the receiving end of a " Torpedo Run" describes his situation as he sees it coming! ( See also "Head-on" when two drivers suffer this phenomenon.

DAM BUSTER- An attempt by a single car/driver to force his way through a "Log Jam"

FOLLOWING IN- The next car to hit a car that is already "Jacking Up" another, is said to have "Followed In" to make 3 cars stuck nose-to-tail.

FENCING- A car/driver forcing another along the barriers on the outside of the circuit.

FIGURE OF EIGHT- Some banger racing is done on a circuit of figure of eight configuration, which adds even more action to the proceedings.

GUY FAWKES- A car having received damage such that, although able to continue, parts are dragging on the ground causing sparks to fly up, is said to be doing a "guy fawkes".

HOT RODDING- A car circulating for more than one lap without makingcontact to another car when it could made a hit is said to be "hot rodding".

HEAD-ON - When two cars travelling in opposite directions hit each other without slowing down.

JACKING UP -The action of hitting another car from behind hard enough to lift its back wheels of the ground.

LOG JAM - When so many cars are wedged together so as to block the circuit.(see also "Brown Trousers")

LURKING- The action of hiding behind a "Blitzed" car or in the infield ready to pounce on a passing rival. Hence the act of "Lurking" is a dangourous occupation!

NOSE JOB- A head on hit on a stationary car.

RED ARROWS- When two or more cars work together to "Take Out" the opposition they are said to be flying in formation doing a "Red Arrows". There are ,of course, team banger races specially for this, but it sometimes occurs at non-team events, especially where good prize money is at stake. Hense you will often see bangers sporting team " colours" of which  they are all very proud. There are some famous ones which travel the country, and have their own following and fan clubs.

ROLLOVER / LOOP THE LOOP / BARREL ROLL- Are all terms used when a car gets turned over either side to side or end over end to land back on its wheels and is able to continue racing.

SIDEWINDER- When a car get forced onto its side to slide for any distance regaining its four wheel stance and being able to continue.

STEAM- Most contacts in banger racing are described as "Steaming Into" another car ,but is also appropriate when damage to a car causes the cooling system of the engine to let out plumes of steam when hoses burst. Often drivers have their vision severely impaired when this happens.

T-BONE -The action of driving straight into the side of another car so that the coming together is in the shape of a "T" . "T-boning" is not allowed on a drivers door and is strictly taboo and of course extremely dangerous.

TAKE OUT -The action of hitting another car ,causing it to lose position but not necessarely disabling it.

TAKING IT TO THE WALL - The action of  forcing another car into the outside barrier head-on. This often disables to victim.

THREE SIXTY- When a car is spun completely around with all four wheels remaining on the ground and able to continue racing without stopping.

TORPEDO- RUN - When a car takes a run at another car which is either in motion or temporarily disabled, from a long distance away with the obvious intention of "Taking-Out" ,"T-Boning", "Taking it to the wall", "Head-On","Following-in",or "Jacking up" it is called a "Torpedo-run" . The crowd can ussually see it coming and build up the cheers with a long OOOOOOOHHHH  AAAAAAAAAHHHH !! as the hit takes place.

So watch out for plenty of action - you'll be sure that whatever happens - there's a BANGERISM for it !!!!!!
