Biography :
Ambrose Bernard Van Landschoot Enlisted Sept 11, 1861 in Co. G 10th Missouri Volunteers in St. Louis, Missouri. While on guard duty in Corrinth, Mississippi in June 1862 he contracted Inflammatory Rheumatism due to the constant stormy weather. He suffered from the rheumatism the rest of his
life and it eventually caused his death. He was in and out of hospitals during the war. On Jan 11, 1863 he fractured his tibia (broken arm) .
Apparently he was court martialed on Sept 14, 1864 for Conduct Prejudiced to good order and Military Discipline and sentenced to 8 months hard labor at Nashville, Tennessee and dishonorably discharged May 23, 1865. There is nothing in this record that tells why he was charged and subsequently court martialled.
After the war he married Mary Jane Holliet who was apparently quite a bit younger than himself. They were married April 7, 1869 at St. Anthony's Church in St. Louis, Missourri. Ambrose's occupation is listed as Grocer. After the ware Ambrose went to live in Atkinson , Henry County, Illinois. He died there
Nov. 1, 1883.
Most of the record is made up of depositions by people who knew him before and after the war. He started to apply for a military pension in 1880 but was not able to complete it as he was confined to his house for the last 24 months of his life with his illness. His widow continued the pension request after his death. One of the deposition was by a Joseph Huyett MD who says he was the family physician of Ambrose's father family for about 10 years prior to the war (This suggests that Ambrose's father also came to America by at least 1851). Doctor Huyett was from adjacent Rockland County, ILLinois.
