Armação de Pêra

The name Armação de Pêra is a reminder of the past when it was still a fishing community. This used to be no more than just a long stretched beach with a collection of shacks, where the fishermen of the nearby town of Pêra used to keep their fishing-gear. The name Armação reflects the barrier of tuna nets, which stretched far out to sea. You can still see what remains of the small fort that was once used for protection purposes. (now used by the GNR). What used to be a centre of the tuna fishing industry is now a touristic beach resort.

Since the sixties, Armação de Pêra, boasting one of the finest and longest sandy beaches of the Algarve, has become a popular location for both Portuguese and international tourists. arschijnlijk te danken aan het kilometerslange zandstrand dat zich uitstrekt naar het oosten. Recently, also the west part, with charming and peaceful beaches, hidden between high cliffs, has been developed with more elegant hotels and luxurious resorts.

Here you can find the little chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, dominating a high cliff that drops into the sea. It is said that no fisherman around here, sets off into the sea without directing a little prayer to the holy virgin.
