graindelavoix (grain of the voice) is an art-collective formed by björn schmelzer. since 1999 he is looking for musicians who want to experiment between performance and creation. the necessity of autoproductive and physical art keeps them together.

graindelavoix is fascinated by voices that are beyond communication, that have no message anymore but rather are the pure expression of their underground: the gritty, intense and instinctive...

graindelavoix uses early music repertoires to find the undercurrent that illuminates our own times: a timeless spirit that stretches out to embrace an interval, a space.

what preoccupies graindelavoix in early music is the bond between notation and what eludes it: the higher consciousness and savoir-faire that the performer brings to a piece (ornamentation, improvisation, gestures...). to graindelavoix, singers are 'spiritual automata'...

material they work with includes franco-flemish polyphony, the art of lamenting, machicotage & other lost ornamentation styles, mediterranean performance traditions, late scholastic dynamics and kinematics, the affective body, gestics, image culture & psycho-acoustica...

graindelavoix gives performances (concert/music theater) that are the accumulated fragments of a wider work and research process: this site makes an attempt at framing.

graindelavoix is 'special guest' of music-centre de bijloke in ghent and has an artistical partnership with the cultural centre of genk. since 2010 graindelavoix is structurally supported by the flemish government. cd's are produced exclusively for glossamusic.

graindelavoix is een kunstenaars-collectief dat opgericht werd door björn schmelzer. sinds 1999 is hij op zoek naar muzikanten die willen experimenteren met de verhouding tussen uitvoering en schepping. de noodzaak van autoproduktieve en fysieke kunst houdt hen samen.

graindelavoix is gefascineerd door stemmen voorbij de communicatie, stemmen die geen boodschap meer overbrengen, maar louter de expressie zijn van hun ondergrond: gruis, intensiteiten, instincten...

graindelavoix zoekt in oude repertoires naar de onderstroom die hen doet oplichten uit hun eigen tijd; hun ontijdse karakter uitspreidt en een interval, een spatie mogelijk maakt.

'oude muziek' fascineert graindelavoix niet omdat ze een illustratie is van een verleden en ook niet om haar mogelijke actualiteit. net omdat ze 'passé' is, bevat ze een potentieel dat nog ongehoord blijft. graindelavoix zoekt in wat te horen is een opening, achter of onder de tong.

wat graindelavoix in oude muziek bezighoudt is het verband tussen notatie en wat daaraan ontsnapt: het 'bovenbewuste' savoir-faire van de uitvoerder (ornamentatie, improvisatie, gestes,..). voor graindelavoix zijn zangers 'spirituele automaten'...

werkmateriaal zijn o.a. de franco-vlaamse polyfonie, de kunst van het klagen, machicotage & andere verloren ornamentatiepraktijken, mediterrane uitvoeringstradities, laat-scholastische dynamica en kinematica, het affectieve lichaam, gestiek, beeldcultuur en psycho-akoestica...

graindelavoix brengt voorstellingen (concert/muziektheater) die de neerslag zijn van een uitgebreid werkproces: deze site is een poging tot kadrering.

graindelavoix is 'speciale gast' van muziekcentrum de bijloke in gent en deelt een artistiek partnership met het cultuurcentrum van genk. vanaf 2010 wordt graindelavoix structureel ondersteund door de vlaamse gemeenschap. de cd's van graindelavoix verschijnen exclusief bij het spaanse label glossa.

graindelavoix est un collectif d'artistes fondé par björn schmelzer. depuis 1999 il est à la recherche de musiciens qui souhaitent jouer sur la relation entre exécution et création. c'est la nécessité de l'art autoproductif et physique qui les réunit. graindelavoix est fasciné par des voix qui sont au-delà de la communication, des voix qui ne transmettent plus de message, mais qui sont uniquement l'expression de leur assise: grésillement, intensités, instincts...

graindelavoix recherche dans les vieux répertoires le courant sous-jacent qui les fait sortir de leur époque, qui étale leur caractère intempestif, qui permet un intervalle, un blanc.

graindelavoix n'est pas fasciné par la musique ancienne parce qu'elle serait une illustration d'un passé, ni pour son éventuelle valeur d'actualité. c'est justement parce qu'elle appartient au passé qu'elle contient un potentiel qui n'est pas encore audible. dans ce qui est audible, graindelavoix cherche une ouverture, derrière ou sous la langue. ce qui passionne graindelavoix dans la musique ancienne, c'est le lien entre la notation et ce qui lui échappe : le savoir-faire 'surconscient' du musicien (ornementation, improvisation, gestes, ...). pour graindelavoix les chanteurs sont des 'automates spirituels'...

le matériel sont e.a. la polyphonie franco-flamande, l'art de la plainte, le machicotage & autres styles d'ornamentation perdus, les pratiques méditerranéennes, la dynamique et la cinématique de la scholastique tardive, le corps affectif, la gestique, l'image et la psychacoustique...

les représentations de graindelavoix (concert/théâtre musicale) sont le résultat d'une démarche élaborée: ce site essaie d'en donner le cadre.

graindelavoix est 'special guest' au centre musicale de bijloke à ghent et entretient une collaboration artistique avec le centre culturel de genk. depuis 2010 graindelavoix reçoit un support structurel de la communauté flamande. les cd's de graindelavoix sortent exclusivement chez glossa.
